postheadericon PHEV’s

To put it simply, a plug-in hybrid is a hybrid with a larger batteries, smaller engine and a larger electric motor with the ability to charge from household electricity. Our plug-in hybrids are able to drive in an electric-only mode, for fifty miles or more, this is called the all-electric range (AER). After the AER (or in driving modes where more power is needed), the gasoline engine provides power to the wheels. The fuel economy in this driving mode is increased. We can obtain 30mpg for Sequoia (our Suburban), 68mpg for Joule, and even 80mpg in our modified EV-1!

Most americans commute 40 miles each day. With a plug-in hybrid, that drive could be within the all electric range! The vehicle would not produce any emissions and the cost to plug in at night is equivalent to 75 cents per gallon of gasoline!

Imagine, 75 cents per gallon, hybrid fuel economy for those long trips and weekend drives!

For 14 years, UC Davis has been creating and demonstrating PHEV’s. These vehicles are the first PHEV’s, and all were built by students.
